Cinematography

Movie name: Resident Evil Afterlife
Genre: Horror
Year of Release: 2010

This film opening clearly exemplifies examples of camera movement relative to the ethos and genre of the film. In the first ten seconds of the opening for this film, the camera can be seen panning around the city displayed in the opening. This part of the opening is a crane shot. This is because the camera camera can be seen orbiting the city at above ground level. Throughout this opening, the tracking shots are used only for the sole purpose of exemplifying the structure of the city to an audience, giving them an accurate idea of the setting behind the movie. In addition to this, the visual breakdown of characters, through the visual movement from legs, waist and then face, are done effectively using crane shots. This is evident as you can see the camera slowly rise from head to toe for the civilians in this shot and following shortly after is the movement of the camera from just above the civilians, to higher than the buildings around them. The camera can be seen panning whilst the mysterious looking Koreans give each other the evil eye before one of them is killed in the shot. In addition to this, the crane shot is used to signify a chain reaction to the audience watching. This chain reaction represents the agonising murderous disease plaguing the planet. An audience can easily make this connotation as you can evidently see the progression of darkness destroying the planet through the use of an effective crane shot that pans around the orbit of the planet.

Film Poster Analysis

1. Blade Runner
This movie poster suggests a element of heroism to an audience. It is automatically signified to the audience that the genre of the movie is action thriller or possibly action science fiction. This is because elements of sci-fi are clearly displayed in the poster. The key elements include: The futuristic building's aligned at the mid-bottom of the poster, the spaceship displayed in the centre of the photo, the font of the title and the lights that can be seen spotted around the two subjects in the photo. The story line appears as though it follows the classical male protagonist protects the planet whilst the girl looks quite mysterious and goes against the gender code as she's doesn't look endangered, however appears have some involvement with the protagonist and possibly his wife. The tagline also hints at the human race being at grave risk and because of the gun in the males hands, i can connote that he is the saviour in this film.
    2.  Scary movie 2
The movie poster for Scary Movie 2 shows elements of comedy as well as slight horror. The reason for this is because the mis-en-scene of the photo removes all connotations of horror/realism to an audience since the costumes, scene and props all look quite comedic to an audience. This is because the two characters who are dressed in typical horror costumes reveal through their facial expressions as well as the facial expressions of everybody around them that there is no element of realism present.  Even the background colour suggests elements of comedy since the colour blue juxtaposes with element of horror present. The shirt which says 'I love dead people' also appears more funny to an audience rather than serious since the element of horror has been replaced with comedy. I can depict that the movie might involve a mystery type chase between the man in orange, who appears to have evil intentions and the three characters at the bottom of the photo. The focal point of the poster, whom is the male in blue, appears to be one of/the main character in the film. The frightened look and posture he gives off suggests that he is in danger of his life which correlates with the element of chase given off.
3. Pirates of the Carribean
This movie poster is most likely about pirates whom are under a quest to find some sort  treasure or reach some sort of goal. An audience is most likely to assume this because the connotations that society links to the ethos of pirates supports this. This is because the posture of the pirates as well as the props, costume and setting all suggest an element of disaster as well as an element of surprise. The element of disaster comes from the desecrate ships that seem to be either in a battle or have just finished one. The ship behind seen in the poster also seems to be under some sort of objective or mission through the sea. The fire seen positioned at the bottom of the photo hints towards the ethos of war/battle. There is also a skull which suggests that there will be a battle between pirates during the movie, wheras the octopus arm hints towards the theme of dystopia and fantasy. Through all these connotations made from the movie poster an audience is most likely to come to the conclusion that the movie features a gang of pirates whom of which embark on a war through the see whilst on a hunt for some sort of treasure or goal and with the element of fantasy suggested through the octopus in the poster, one can only imagine that they come under attack of some sort of mystical creature during their journeys through the sea.
4. I'm not Scared
From this movie poster an audience can infer that a young boy (probably between the ages of (6-12) embarks on some sort of adventure to come to face a long term fear he's previously had. Perhaps there's a hidden cave near his house that he's been scared to visit until now or perhaps even loses a possession of his that's been trapped in a cave for many years and he only now develops the courage to get it back. Elements of courage, bravery, challenges and a lose of fear are all exemplified through this movie poster. This is because the boy in the poster, as well as his body posture and the darkness through the chiaroscuro lighting suggests connotations on mystery/bravery to an audience.
5. Uzak
The film poster for the Turkish film drama 'Uzak', which means 'afar' in Turkish, exemplifies elements of travel, misery and perhaps change within the poster. The setting of the film seems to take place in a less vibrant economy then ours. This hints towards character progression to improve his/her's life and escape a cycle of poverty. The colour scheme of the photo is quite warm and less vibrant signifying elements of depression and sadness. The subject in the photo appears to be looking downwards which shows a lack of happiness and confidence and perhaps the character wants to escape the misery of his/her city. The fact that they are looking towards a poverty engulfed city with such an opposed posture, exemplifies the fact that the subject in the photo wants change not for him but for his people also.
6. Sin City
The film poster for the thriller 'Sin City's , exemplifies elements of anguish, vengeance, trust and crime. The subjects in the photos seem to be together as a gang however other elements of the photo suggest that they are all fighting together for one cause. Perhaps they are fighting for crime, perhaps they are fighting against crime. This is unclear however an audience would connote that they are on a mission to kill someone/something. The chiaroscuro lighting signifies to an audience that the theme of this movie is quite sadistic and the figure at the bottom holds the role of either a target or an enemy during the movie. An alternative analysation of this would perhaps suggest that dark figure is a mysterious saviour in the movie.

7. Bride and Prejudice This movie appears to be apart of the romance genre. This is because the two subjects in the film poster , both male & female, appear to be placed in the setting of a wedding. This exemplifies romance, bond and relationship affairs as the main ethos' of the film. In addition to this, there are also many subjects, from what appears to be the two lovers family placed around them. All of these features signify the ethos of the film as romance and also connotes to an audience that this movie is about two lovers whom tackle their problems regarding their families as well as their conflicting relationship and eventually get married together. The colour scheme of the photo, as well as the placements/postures of the actors around the couple all signify a loving and romantic atmosphere for the film to follow.
8. Million Dollar Baby
An audience can connote from this film poster that the main genre of this film is action/fighting. This is because the chiaroscuro lighting hints towards the theme of action and seriousness, which also relates to the female in the poster. This is because she represents the ethos of violence and fighting through her dominant posture, muscular back and confident look in her eyes. These are all key elements for a martial arts movie poster. The other two characters around her would come off to an audience as mysterious and shady yet important and significant figures in the movie. An audience could connote that this movie is about a female fighter who embarks on a challenge to defeat her enemies in combat with the help of a supportive, experienced figure in the movie (e,g an audience would expect Morgan Freeman to be the trainer of the girl in the film.

Sound in Media

Reservoir Dogs.
In this 90's sensational movie 'Reservoir Dogs' contrapuntal sound is clearly demonstrated throughout the scene of 'Cops Ear'. This is made clearly evident as a man is clearly being hurt in an extremely violent manor whilst he continues to play uplifting music. This music is clearly juxtaposed within the scene of the movie as they both represent strong nature of sorrow and happiness. The music that is playing during the horrid torture of a police officer appears to be diegetic sound that is coming from the world of the movie as the man starts to use the record player. However this is clearly untrue and one way this is exemplified is through the sound bridge that appears right after the torture scene has ended and carries on throughout the next scene. This diegetic sound played is also clearly started off as basic contrapuntal music.
The cop seems to  be in a very bad shape since an audience can clearly see the immense amount of pain he is in, however the audio played during this scene is quite merrily and  contended in comparison to what a general audience would expect to hear from this type of media.

Lighting

Lighting -
1. The first picture displays a strong example of top lighting. This is because the direction of light comes from above the subject. This is also an example of low key lighting as there are dramatic shadows that can be seen engulfing the subject. This creates the effect of hollowness and enigma to an audience in question of the scene.
2. This is an example of high key lighting as there is a minimal amount of shadows being casted throughout the photo. This picture also displays an example of top lighting as the light seems to be coming from above the subject in the photo.  This creates the effect of realism appearing more serious and realistic to an audience.
3. This is a strong example of low key lighting. There seems to be a key light coming from a higher angle. This displays an example of realism portraying a realistic atmosphere to the audience.
4.This picture conveys horror and enigma to the audience however high key lighting is still displayed in this scene as there is a minimal amount of shadows casted that aren't natural to an audience. This too is an example of upper lighting as the light appears to be comjng from below the subject.
5. This picture conveys high key lighting. This is because the shadows casted appear to be from natural light. It also appears that upper lighting is displayed though the curtains of the photo . This shows an atmosphere of pessimism and also gives visceral pleasure to an audience.
